It well into the deepest part of night by the time I left the warehouse again. I should be sleeping, and I knew Iâd regret not going straight to bed after visiting the pawn shop, but I couldnât shake the fact that there was much more taking place than I understood. I was enough beyond my comfort zone that it was time for me to ask for help.
Summoning my connection to magic, I pulled myself through and to Philast.
When I emerged, it was in a darkened stretch of open road. A tree-lined driveway in front of me wound with shadows. Chances were good that I would only anger Philast by coming here at this time of night, but better that than face another attack without knowing what was taking place.
Heading toward his home was always a strange experience. Philast had magic, I had seen it from the very first moment that Iâve met, but even knowing that, I still wasnât entirely certain about the source of his power. More likely than not, he was a mage of some sort, though even in knowing that, it was not evident what type of mage he was. At first, I wondered why he would hide that, but decided that it gave him a certain mystique he preferred to maintain.
A faint tingle washed over me as I made my way along the drive. It was magic, though I still had not determined the purpose of the spell. Reaching the door, I looked in the windows, searching for sign that someone might still be awake. It was possible Philast still hadnât returned, and if that were the case, I would need to push Leland to figure out where heâd gone.
The door opened, and surprisingly, it was Philast himself who met me.
His deep blue eyes stared at me, wrinkles deepening along the corners. âCassandra.â
A part of me tensed when he used my name like that, but if there was one thing I knew about Philast, it was that he wasnât fae and had no interest in binding me. Why would he need to when I had worked with him willingly?
âSorry to come at such a strange hour. I just didnât know where else to go.â
âIs everything alright?â
I took a deep breath, forcing a smile. âI⦠I just need to see if you have answers to a few questions.â While standing there, I couldnât shake the persistent sense of the binding that Prince Adam had placed on me. It was a constant presence, and in times like these, times that were slower and allowed me to think on it, I was all too aware of how that binding settled into me. With enough time, that binding would likely become permanent. Then the fae would know how to find me wherever I went. There would ben no running from my fate.
âWhat sort of questions?â
âCan I come in?â
Philast looked past me, and for a moment, I was aware of the faint stirring of power before it faded. It was never clear what sort of magic he used.
